Connecting the Community through Music
SSO has deep roots in its community and we’re always looking for novel ways to engage them in our programming. Whether it’s through musical partnership, student artwork or “beyond the stage” offerings, we’re excited to bring people together and make our concerts true community events.
Visual Arts Collaborations
We put kids to work! Our Visual Arts Collaboration Program has made over 300 student artists an integral part of our concert, as their own artwork is projected above the orchestra during our popular family-friendly concerts.
Students are introduced to the music by visiting orchestra members and then interpret the music in their artisitc creations under the direction of school art teachers. Artwork is displayed in the lobby and student representatives introduce their project from the stage. It’s fun for the family as parents and children alike attend programs to see their artwork on the big screen.
Instrument Petting Zoos
Don’t feed the violins! Our Instrument Petting Zoos have become our signature activity at family concerts. Kids and families mob the base of the stage to mingle with musicians, try out instruments, and, in the case of one tiny shy confused little girl, try to pat a musician themself on the shoulder.
Choral Collaborations
Nothing beats the force of a full orchestra with choir. SSO has partnered with multiple local choirs from across the region, including First Baptist Church, Western Reserve Chorale, West Shore Chorale, performing works from Faure’s ethereal Requiem to the power Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
Unique Partnerships
Hallelujah! SSO partnered with the renowned Cleveland Chorale gospel choir for a moving performance of gospel classics arranged for full orchestra and choir, African-American composers, and poetry recitations
Lobby Events
Art, Pumpkins and Pie Raffles! Pre-show activities give our audience a “total experience”. Past activities include Halloween fun (pumpkin art gallery, games, raffles, decorations), Art Galleries and Culinary School offerings
