VISITORS GUIDE

WHAT TO KNOW

Everything you ever wanted to know about attending a Suburban Symphony Orchestra Concert
  • Doors typically open about a half hour before the show.
  • Check individual concert listings for any special pre-concert events.
  • Performances at the Maltz Performing Arts Center are ticketed events; we recommend buying tickets ahead of time to save time and hassle, but tickets are always available at the door. Plan a little extra time if you need to stop in at the box office
  • Our home base is Beachwood High School, where we play the majority of our concerts in their auditorium. Address: 25100 Fairmount Blvd, Beachwood, OH
  • Select Programs are held at the Cultural Arts Center at Disciples Christian Church 3663 Mayfield Rd, Cleveland Hts, OH
  • Each year, we also play at least one special venue, such as the Maltz Performing Arts Center 1855 Ansel Rd, Cleveland, OH
  • Almost all of our concerts are free, with the exception of our annual fundraising concert event (typically less than $25). Check our concert pages for specific details
  • For those ticketed events, student/youth reduced pricing is usually available
  • Free-will contributions are gladly accepted at the door or online! Your support makes all the difference!
Pretty much whatever you want! If you wanna dress a little cute (because, yes, you’re worth it) or just wear your favorite jeans, it’s all good! But fair warning, if you wear all black, you’ll look like one of us and confused people may compliment you endlessly in the lobby after the show.

To go or not to go often comes down to one word: parking. But don’t worry! We have ample, easy and free parking steps from the door at Beachwood High School, Disciples Christian Church and the Maltz Performing Arts Center. For concerts at other venues, we’ll post parking info on the concert page; we know it’s important!

Kids of all ages are always welcome. Ultimately, you know your kid the best. As a 10 year old attendee once confessed after Beethoven’s (very long) Ninth: “I may have been sleeping a little, but i was listening”

Settling in:
  • Most events aren’t ticketed and you can just walk right in. For performances at the Maltz Performing Arts Center, tickets are required. Advance purchase on line is recommended but tickets are available at the door.
  • Say hello! Our friendly volunteers will welcome you at the door as you’re handed the day’s program.
  • Pick a seat: all seating is general admission. Find your favorite place to sit and eavesdrop on your fellow patrons while you wait for the show.
  • Read your phone: We provide links to additional digital content: program notes and more, if paper programs aren’t your thing.
  • Pre-concert slide show:  Giant screens with info about the performers (bios, fun facts), the music, and bonus content related to the concert theme
  • Lobby Fun: If you’re lucky. you’ll catch one of our “Lobby Experiences” before the show and during intermission (art, photos, games, raffles, snacks and more). Check our concert listings for details on upcoming events
Dim the lights:
  • Presidential welcome: Our president will welcome you with an informative speech and give you the rundown
  • The music: Enjoy some stress-free “you time” while you listen to some amazing music by some hardworking players
  • Inside Scoop: If you’re extra lucky, the maestro will give some of his patented stage comments about the music.
  • Intermission: For those that overhydrated before the show, most programs have a 15-20 minute intermission
  • Fond Farewell: And on the way out, chat with the maestro as he greets patrons at the exit

We forgive you. We know it’s not your fault; our greeter will let you into the auditorium and direct you to a seat during an appropriate break in the music

First, we refer you to the criminal code of Ohio.

Second: for all you Starbucks addicts, no food or drinks are allowed inside the auditorium itself, but feel free to consume these items in the lobby before the show.

It’s pretty straightforward!

People generally clap:

  • After the President’s Welcome Speech
  • When the concertmaster walks out to tune the orchestra.
  • When the conductor and /or soloist walks on stage
  • When the conductor asks the orchestra to stand
  • At the end of each piece, when the conductor lowers his baton*
  • The conductor or soloist may make more than one curtain call and the conductor will often acknowledge individual musicians who had key parts by having them stand (give them a special woo-hoo)

* For pieces with multiple movements, it’s tradition to hold applause between movements, though sometimes the audiences have been moved to (or paid to) applaud in between. And that’s OK too. Follow the crowd!

You can use the program to count the movements, but sometimes the composer plays a trick and there’s not a break between all of them. To find the end, watch for that baton to lower and every musician’s eye on the conductor!

We’re always looking for ways level up your concert experience and make our concerts a true community event.  We partner with local groups to bring lobby actiivities that complement the theme of the music. Enjoy them before the concert or during intermission. Past events have included Halloween Fun and Games, Art and Photo Galleries, Snacks, and Pre-Concert Lectures.
